Whether you’re a twitter fanatic or just starting out on twitter, I am pretty sure you want a whole lot more followers than you have now. Many have mentioned that you can actually make money from twitter and also get lots of targeted traffic. No doubt! But I see it more like a fun tool. You should treat it like fun and I am pretty sure your followers can feel it.
Here’s what I recommend you to do to get yourself more Twitter followers:
1) Get A Customized Background For Your Twitter Page
Most users do not bother to customize their twitter page background and I find that they are losing another good opportunity to brand themselves. More worse are those who do not even upload a photo and uses the default twitter avatar. Customizing your own twitter background takes only ten minutes with photoshop and it allows you to insert your personal profile and photo right on your background.
I may not be very good at describing it but check out my twitter page if you need an example : http://twitter.com/PeiProfit
2) Give Your Followers Some Link Love
Like the famous mogul John Chow always do, he will ask a Question of the Day on twitter and those who manage to reply in time will get featured on his blog. Which is what most people look forward to right? This could help you build up your reputation and more people will enjoy following you.
3) Follow Those Who Will Follow You Back
If you need two extra followers on your list, follow @PeiProfit and @BarackObama. I do follow those who follow me back because I prefer to have interaction then having just fans. For those who followed me and haven’t got a follow back, please send me a tweet and inform me! So how do you determine whether one will follow you back or not? All I can say is try your luck and look for people who have almost the same amount of followers and following.
4) Add A “Follow Me On Twitter” In Your Forum Signature
Yeah as per the traditional forum marketing, throw in a call to action that ask people to follow you on twitter and trust me, most people will if they enjoy your posts and replies. It’s easy!
5) Leave Your Twitter URL Instead Of Blog URL When You Leave Comments
Heard about marketing your blog by commenting on blogs? You can do the exact same work for your twitter page and the more people who come across your page, the better chances of increasing your number of followers.
6) Update Frequently And Be Interesting
Well people like interesting things and so do you! So if you are always updating your followers with interesting readings, you will get endless flow of followers. Nobody likes to follow people who have only 20 updates. Do you?
7) Educate Your Readers About What Twitter Is
Let your readers know what twitter is about and make them interested to follow you. As for me, I made a few posts like 16 Must Have Twitter Tools For Twitter Fanatics, 15 Innovative Uses For Twitter, Educate Your Readers With What Twitter Is About. Tell them whats so good about twitter and they should start twitting if they haven’t!
Spam Following
This method works but I don’t really advise it unless you are desperate. Spam following means following as many people as you can by random clicking and you probably see a quick rise in your number of followers but that’s kind of pointless. So it really depends what you want to achieve here!
I hope you will be seeing jumps in your twitter counter and enjoy this twitter video below:

Good tips! In fact, I have used some of them myself already – My new website will be including a section dedicated to helping people get more followers among other things.
It will be integrated a lot better of course, but that is the general idea
Lots of great things to come from OnePoke!

I think I follow most of these (even the last one sometimes, whoops) but I haven’t got a custom background yet. I keep meaning to but there are always other things that need doing first and I wonder if it’s really worth it…. what do you think?

Wouldn’t #3 be pretty close to spam following? I mean, it’s definitely not targeting…

Dennis, I think it is close to spam but not equal to spam, in most case those following you must have some common interest with you following them might even help you to find other interesting networks.

China – I totally agree, however that’s not what it says. Following those that follow you is a good idea….#3 says to follow those that WILL follow you.
“So how do you determine whether one will follow you back or not? All I can say is try your luck and look for people who have almost the same amount of followers and following”
Big difference.

Give Your Followers Some Link Love – that’s an excellent idea. John Chow is a highly respected blogger and it probably works well for him but might not be so effective for those of us who are still developing our blogs, however the concept is worth trying.

Good points! It´s funny how much a good looking Twitter profile page matters. No one is going to follow you of you have the bubbly blue back ground and the brown avatar icon. You will get a lot more followers if you take 10 minutes and spice up the page a little.

On “#5) Leave Your Twitter URL Instead Of Blog URL When You Leave Comments”…I’m not sure I’ll do this. It means sacrificing a backlink. I’ve yet to see this happen in all my commenting. Have you practised this?

Definitely some good tips on getting followers. There’s also a user, @truefollowers – anyone on their list of followers should support following back anyone who follows them. Sorry if that was confusing… to many follows in one sentence.
