12 Tips To Become A Dot Com Mogul In The Blogosphere
on 21 October 2008 - 2,432 viewsMany bloggers are so blinded with the temptation to monetize their blog without realizing that the money is in their traffic. So what if you have the perfect adsense placement? So what if you have optimized ads position on sale? No one is going to get it or click them if you don’t have any traffic. The best way to get traffic besides a good SE listing is to create a branding for yourself.
Take John Chow for example, he doesn’t hold the No. 1 position on Google for “make money online” but still he is getting an endless flow of traffic to his blog daily. Why? Because he is branded as the most influential blogger and a guru in this game!
This is something that we have to work continuously to achieve the problogger status. I am going to share some tips and personal experience on how to create a branding yourself in the easiest way ever.
1. Visit Blogs Of Your Related Niche DAILY - Know thyself, know thy competitors. Get in touch with what bloggers around you are talking about so that you will be updated with any news. If they have MyBlogLog widget installed, they may notice a new face and they will most likely click on it and check out who is reading their blog. I do click on the little pictures that shows on MyBlogLog widget whenever I notice a new visitor and I would probably read their blog as well. You just gained yourself some traffic and if they like your content, they would probably throw a link to your blog since its a good practice to show link love these days. What a win-win situation.
2. Replying To Comments - This includes both comments on your own blog and others’. Try to avoid “Wow good article..”, “Thanks mans… I like it!” or things like that, unless you do not wish to get some free traffic from these comments. Instead, I suggest you do alittle research and provide a solution to someone’s question if there is any or you can simply create a point of debate from one comment. This works very well for your own blog and it is bound to invite a massive number of commentators. If you have it, flaunt it!
3. Hit The Top Commentators Rank - Try your best to hit the very top position of the Top Commentators section of other blogs or at the very least, be part of it. This can gain you some free targeted traffic and some good backlinks. Other readers would probably find that you are someone who knows what you are saying and they would start following contents on your blog as well. Provided your comments and content are constructive!
4. Provide More ‘How-To’ Than Asking ‘How-To’ - By asking how to, you have just put yourself a level lower than many others because you just declared there are things you don’t know! By providing how to, readers see you as an expert of the field and you will just build up your name from there. No matter where your level of experience is, what results you have gotten so far, I strongly suggest you do some proper research and draft out more ‘How-To’ tutorials on your blog. Spend more time doing it rather than just learning how to do it. Experience and result will follow suite…
5. Link To Gurus Of Your Field - By throwing a link to the gurus, it is as good as announcing your entrance into the game. Let them know you are in it and if you are able to drive some good traffic from your blog to theirs, they will accept you into their community. Imagine the gurus mentioning your name and throwing back a link love to your blog one day, hows that for a branding package?
6. Double Check Your Entries - Make sure you have no spelling errors or any sort that confuses your readers. This is a total taboo if you are looking to brand yourself as an expert in your niche. Why would any expert make such mistakes?
7. Be Active In Forums - Especially in the “Newbie Section”. They will probably make you their idol if you can be of some aid to these newbies. Well, even if you are also a newbie, nobody is asking you to act like one. There is always a first time to become a PRO! Forums are a good way of driving traffic to your blog and letting others know that you can be a resource to them. Just like what I mentioned in point 4, it is advisable to do some research and be there to answer to other users’ needs. It will be good if you can throw in some personal experience as well. Never doubt that you can’t help anyone because of your experience level, you never know who might just need that helping hand from you.
8. Get Testimonials - If you have been of any help to anyone, request for a testimonial from them tactfully. Just let them know you will be placing it on your blog and it in turns give their names more exposure as well. Testimonials is a really good way of branding yourself because it shows greater sense of reliability. Try to include a photo, name and website to prove that it is a legit testimonial.
9. Write And Submit Articles - This is cheesey but never underestimate the power of writing and submitting articles. This is one of the strongest and most powerful advertising and backlinking tip that I recommend. Not only will you brand yourself as an expert in the blogosphere with your articles being flaunt around on various blogs, you get a massive amount of free targeted traffic as well. You would probably get backlinks as well if they decided to show your articles on their blogs. Your name is the blogosphere will just grow exponentially.
10. Exchange Reviews - This is just a better reason to ask for a link exchange. By exchanging reviews, readers of both blogs will be able to know more about you and start reading your blog as well. For example, you have 1000 visitors to your blog and I have 1000 visitors to mine. My visitors start visiting your blog after reading my review and vice versa, there we have just gained ourselves 2000 visitors each. Spreading your name to 2,000 by using a 1,000 effort…
11. Guest Post For Other Blogs - Nobody will request for a guest post from you if they think that you are unable to provided reliable contents. Therefore, when readers see that you have been invited as a guest blogger for certain blogs, it shows that your content is much sought after and you have gained some credibility in this field.
12. Be A Resource - Lastly, I strongly advise that we should all be a resource to others if we want to create a branding for ourselves. Be there to offer help to friends in your community, any time anywhere! Don’t be stingy with your knowledge or products, if you have an e-book to share, SHARE! If you know something that others don’t, SHARE! That way people will see you as a PRO and would most likely come back for more of your content.

Great list, but I’m not sure what you mean by #10. You mean write a reivew of another blog, and vice versa? Wouldn’t that seem,… well,… weird?
Hmm.. Its either doing an exchange review or simply get people to review your blog by offering to link back to their blogs.
Now that’s an interesting concept, one I’ve never thought of, and one I’d have to think about for awhile. Have you done it?
I have not tried that yet.. Just an idea.. Speaking of which, are you interested? haha..
I was going to recommend that we swap link exchanges in our blogrolls, but you don’t have one. What’s up with that?
Of coz I do! Just that I changed the name to Link Love. =)
Ben -
I have been blogging for a few months now and I think all of these are great points for anyone(newbie or advanced). The two points that stand out for me are #1 and #6.
Commenting on related blogs can not only get you traffic but it also builds relationships with other bloggers. I tend to see related blogs as assets, not competitors.
Spelling and grammar are also important. I think to occasional misspelling or grammar mistake is ok (we are human) but repeated offenses are not. I have a friend proof read the article before I post. It takes 5-10 minutes and I do the same for him. Like you said, it is a win win situation.
Great post!! I ways learn something when I come to your blog.
Andy
Yes you are right Andy. I am glad to hear that..
By the way…Approve my comments!!! I spent quite some effort commenting there… but none showing..=(
Hi Ben,
Great tips you got here. I personally like #3. Hit The Top Commentators Rank. I have seen a big growth of backlinks doing this but more importantly I gained new friends in the community.

Yeah I do agree with getting new friends in the community. It really helps to keep your blog active and know that you’re not alone..
Looks like you got all the right ideas in mind to be the next dot com mogul.
Thanks Kuanhoong.. I believe I left some comments on your blog as well .=)
Hey I’m doin’ alright on this list
with a few more to go.
Blog reviews happen constantly, free or paid.
Thanks for the blog. I think you’ve proven how important number 4 is! Providing information is helpful as it gives us reasons to read the blog!
I think i’ll start writing my own blog after reading this, will most likely put it on this website: Free iPod Touch, as I think a personal aspect to the website would help.
J Azzy
Sure thing. Nice to see you around =)
When I first got started, I could not believe that you could get traffic from some of the things that were suggested. Well most are working. I have checked my visitor path in StatCounter and find a lot of visits to my site from my recent articles. I have a few from Forum posts. I just gave a testimonial 2 days ago and my link has been clicked 8 times in 2 days just from that testimonial alone. I am now a believer and need to increase my efforts.
Thanks for a great post Ben

Tips for your readers…
Money Is in the List…OPT in LIST and More ! PART 1…
Opt-In e-Mail Marketing
Most of us already know about opt-in marketing because we have subscribed to some service or wanted to learn more about some product or service being offered on the Internet. In many cases, we simply ignore these e-mails because we really don’t need their product or service any longer and perhaps not even when we gave out our e-mail address. So, if we ourselves have signed up and given our e-mail address in return for the use of some service or to receive free information or products—but then not been inclined to even
read any of the subsequent e-mails—then why should we be inclined to think that we could possibly make $$$$ ( MONEY ) using the same system?
Like any proven and effective system or strategy, there will always be the extremes. Essentially, opt-in e-mail marketing is truly the most effective means to receive qualified leads via a precision marketing effort—when done properly. Unfortunately, many marketers have went with the “size matters” approach and built massive lists of names and then deluged them continually with autoresponders that were poorly crafted and not targeted to any specific market. Thus, they were watered down and alienated their potential audience. Typically, using the “shotgun” approach with a huge list might get someone a 1% conversion rate on actual sales.
However, it is possible to make the same number of sales using a list of 1,000 names as someone using a massive list of 100,000. Many website owners, however, decide that copywriting is key while ignoring the most obvious reason for low conversion rates: the product or service is being marketed to the wrong people! To be successful and to have any chance of making $$$$ ( MONEY ) or less—you need to have a targeted list of names.
But how do you get this list of targeted names?

I’ve linked to many gurus before but never got as much as a thank you for your mention or linkback. Perhaps they are too busy or just don’t practice it. I’ve also linked to not so famous gurus who would just visit my site(as seen in my recent readers widget but never gave a comment back.I’m glad that you always do this. Thanks Ben.

Yah there is a very slim chance that big names will link back to us but nevertheless, you never know that one day might come.
I have gurus visiting my blog appearing on mybloglog too but no activities from them, kinda disappointing at times. They talk so much about getting into the community or things like that but they don’t give a damn about it anymore.
Lastly, you’re welcome Peter. =)
Lots of work to do, but it will worth at the end with success, looks you do most of the above, I have seen you in big Blogs like Chow´s, you are very active, now I see what is need it to succeed.

All very good advice to bloggers….and some of it applies to owners of static sites like mine!
I agree with your no1 point about daily activity on blogs in your niche, if you don’t know what the latest developments are then it’s easy to get out of touch quickly. In addition you don’t want your competitors attracting your visitors because you haven’t create fresh relevant content.
Jonathan@Friends&Money’s last blog post..How To Talk About Debt Problems With Family Members
wow those were some pretty helpful tips thanks for sharing these great points because they will make it a lot simpler for me as a blogger to become a lot more successful

but the most important thing is to bring something new fresh and interesting because from what i read on blog i can tell that it’s just duplicate stuff
lila’s last blog post..B12K : Opera 10.00 (Unite)
I agree with posting on forums. Always be active on the forums of your niche. You can learn a lot as well as give back to the community.
Writing articles also helps. Use an article submission service to send your article out to hundreds of directories rather than submitting them one at a time. I use unique article wizard, although there are others out there.
Write and write and you will succeed.
great tips, thanks.
