I am glad and honored to have Garry Conn as my first interview candidate on Pei Profit Dot Com. It was held on Google’s very own instant messenger, Google Talk. Garry is an authority figure in the money blogging world and he was willing to share his experience with us here on Pei Profit Dot Com, so be sure to grab whatever you can! I really had an enjoyable time working and talking to him, catching the amiable side of him which most of you won’t realise from his blog GarryConn.com
Before we go into the beef of the interview, here’s a personal video introduction from Garry himself.
Ben: I have read on your blog that you make quite a bit of money from adsense. Is it still a good money making platform these days?
garryconn: Sure it is. Google AdSense is one of the most easiest ways to make money online. It is a perfect program for new beginners who want to get their feet wet with starting a career with making money online.
Ben: I noticed you make money from ClickBank too. What will be your recommendations for my readers to start making money from Clickbank?
garryconn: ClickBank is an excellent company to do business with. They have thousands of amazing digital products available for people to promote and sell. Like any program that involves selling products or services, it is very important for the marketer to know the product being sold. Not only that, but to believe in the product being sold. On my personal blog, I often explain to my readers that it is important to act as if you own the product being sold. In order to find success with selling ClickBank products, you need to be familiar with the products you want to sell. Secondly, you need to target the right audience. Thirdly, when it comes to promoting products on a blog with a subscriber base, it is very important that you run a very balanced and healthy blog; meaning, your blog shouldn’t be always be perceived as a place that constantly sells. The author of the blog should provide amazing and quality information to the subscribers and then sell products that enhance the advice, tips and tricks being offered.
Ben: I have been a regular follower of GarryConn.com and I notice that you update your blog daily, sometimes 2-3 times even. Where do you get your inspirations from?
garryconn: I see a blog story in everything. Writing comes very natural to me. My inspirations come from just having a good perception of understanding what people want to read. Also…
One of the more important inspirations is understanding how much people need help. There are many reasons why people want to make money online. For some people, learning how to earn money on the Internet can improve their quality of life. That inspires and fuels me with energy to write on my blog. I have passion for helping people because when I help people in return it helps me.
Ben: Do you believe in blog commenting and forum participation as forms of marketing technique for your blog?
garryconn: For sure. I also believe in participating in instant messenger interviews such as the one you are conducting. Spreading the word about what I do and where I do it is vital towards the success of my blog. While I myself don’t participate in a lot of forums, I do comment on a few blogs from time to time. Social networking has been a large focus of mine lately as well as online videos and even streaming a live video feed on my blog. Another focus of mine is continuing to build my mailing list. I have a private mailing list and it is used to provide subscribers with exclusive content that never gets published on the blog.
Ben: Oh you mentioned Video Blogging! The last time I made a post about Vlogging, my readers got excited about it. Would you like to share with them what benefit has vlogging brought you Garry?
garryconn: Many people, including myself, absorb information better when it is communicated vocally or visually rather than written. When I provide my readers with videos it enables me to connect with people who typically don’t have time or the desire to read long articles. Often my video tutorials provide live examples, meaning when people watch the videos it’s as if they were standing over me watching what I do on the computer. Video blogging provides a mutual benefit for both myself as well as my readers because ultimately it allows us to make an enhanced connection together.
Ben: Twitter was the first place where I got in touch with you and I appreciate your follow back. What makes you follow or unfollow someone on Twitter?
garryconn: I am torn with what I should do with Twitter. I have almost 1400 people following me yet I only follow less than 200. For me, Twitter is a lot like FaceBook and I really only want to follow the people that I truly know, or at a minimum, want to get to know better. There are people who follow everyone that follows them, but I tried that and it made my timeline way too busy, which caused me to lose touch with the people that are truly important or interesting to me. So to answer your question as asked, I follow people who I either know or who interest me.
Ben: I see that you have a section on ‘Blogs I Like To Read’. What does it take to get listed there?
garryconn: I think that is pretty self explanatory… In order for your blog to be included in that section of my blogroll, it has to be a blog that I like to read.
Ben: Haha Silly Me! Now here’s my final question for my readers, if you were to give your best advice to make money blogging in one sentence, what would it be?
garryconn: I can’t answer that in one, so I will give you two:
Here is #1: Ask yourself, “What am I good at and what do I enjoy?” And then ask yourself, “How can I take these two elements and shape them into something profitable online?”
And #2 I want to invite you and your readers to read the full story behind that quote here: Sometimes The Way To Make Money Online Isn’t What You Expect

This seems to be an interesting interview. But with all due to respect about Gary’s theory about putting Google Adsense on a new blog, I strongly disagree with him.
Actually, I left a comment on his video post about it and contradicting his idea – Should You Use Google AdSense Right Away On A New Site? but he did not reply on it.
I don’t want to be repetitive in explaining my side, so I am inviting you to check the link above. From there, you can judge for yourself who do you think has a better idea about putting Google Adsense on a new blog.
I respect Gary as marketer, but I just cannot agree with some of his theories.
Thanks.

Sure I will check it out Rich. Anyway, there is no right and wrong answer about this I guess. Everyone is constantly looking for their own solution and who know what works next.

Hi Rich,
There is nothing wrong with disagreeing with me. I am not one to say whether it is better or not to add AdSense to a new blog. I am just here to say that I don’t have time to go back and add it in later. When I build a site, I have all the puzzle pieces at hand and it’s my job to put them together and then quickly move onto the next puzzle.

awesome interview..google adsense was the first platform i tried, i only made a few bucks and gave up on it, newbie in me of course made that decision..then i figured out ways to put the google adsense out there on my other projects and of course pei you gave me some advices as well..google adsense still a good money making platform
gary made some good points about twitter, i follow evreybody that follows me because i feel that they deserve to be followed since they’re following someone like me that really dont have anything interesting to tweet about except for a few tweets here and there, but the people i follow are interesting and they provide a lot of useful information
i think when people see bloggers like john chow and such, they tend to get the wrong idea about blogs..trying to create a blog to make money isnt the way to go, if you want to make money i would say research other things such as internet/e-mail marketing and joinin affiliates and so forth, a blog should be more of your documentation and insights on how you did things to get where you are, offering advises, suggestions and tips. but thats just what i see. i used to be that person that thought i could start a blog and make money easily, but i found out through my mistakes that in order to make money you have to venture into other things and now im busier doing that so i tend to update my blogs every 2 days or so
sorry pei i rambled on but your interview really inspired me to talk about the topics you’ve touched on.

Great interview Ben. Garry is a very likable person because he will do things like this interview and give his opinion without looking down on everyone. He’s a real down to earth person and I think you picked well for your first interview.
Speaking of Twitter, I am following Garry and I decided to see if he was following me. He isn’t and that’s ok but I was pleased to see he is following a bunch of my friends, including you Ben. That’s what made me come to the conclusion he’s a real down to earth person. Those he’s following on Twitter isn’t a list of ‘who’s who’ of marketing gurus.

Thanks for the compliments Brian. You know… to be honest, when I started following everyone who followed me on Twitter, my timeline was going nuts. I was able to closely follow people and it just became a big mess. I am glad that you commented here because I did check out your blog and I do enjoy the topic. I have subscribed to you and I am now following you on Twitter.

Hi Ben,
Congratulations for your interview, How did you make Gary accept yur invitation? This can be very interesting, tell us, give us some tips.
I personally dont like much adsense, even that I know I can make some money out of it, but dealing with Google is always a pain. They are always changing their rules and we may end up breaking some and they will penalize you faster than saying “Wait No, Please”.

I used to have the idea that to make money from adsense you got to have lots of traffic. So Garry’s blog has lots of traffic proving this theory although untested. But I’ve seen at least one top blogger whose blog has lots of traffic but who earns less than $100 a month on adsense, so there is more to it than traffic. But then again that’s just one.

I is called search engine traffic. Social Media traffic does not convert to Adsense clicks and if they do you will probably be smart priced since most of them will buy nothing. People tha arrive from social sites are not looking to buy something. But people searching for something on Google is.

Great interview
I’ve been following Garry for a few months now and his helpness has extremely impressed me – i’ve found heaps of great info on his blog.
I then started using adsense a little more and got from $1 to $15 a day at one point, but it has died down a bit more recently

AdSense is never consistent. Your earnings will spike and dip over time. I enjoy the holiday and sales market quite a bit such as 4th of July Sales. Targeting holidays and sales events can be very profitable.

Ben,
Good interview. I’ve been following Garry’s blog since his interview on Yan’s blog and this year he guess posted on my blog too. I used Google Adsense for a month or two then got banned without knowing the real reason why. Their explanation was quite unhelpful and something about my Adsense account posing risk to people which I can’t really understand.Anyway I won’t pursue it for the time being. I’m glad Garry talked about Clickbank as I’m trying to focus a little more on it. I just found my alternative to adsense alled CBproAds and I like it. But of course you know it since you signed up too under me. So you can say I now have the equivalent of Google Adsense on my blog.

Yeah I found CBproads on your blog. Not sure if it pays as well as Adsense. Google has too many terms to follow.

Yea I realized you were using CBproads. Now are thse PPC or Pay per sale because I was looking at the CBproads website and it seems that you get paid on sales. Is that correct?
