i totally agree with you about PPC benefiting larger companies.
i shall be joining a very large software development company and working on their PPC campaigns full-time, it shall be interesting to see what kind of budget they have to play with, and what results PPC brings for them.

The good thing about that approach was that it required zero-to-no investment on my part, other than about half an hour a month to post something.

This is good info, advertising on your site is a great way to make money but like you said its hard to get started because you have prove to the advertiser that they will benefit from advertising on your site.
