In this 2nd installation I would like to pick a local newspaper publication here in Singapore as an example and watch how they make money by giving away free stuff and how we can implement it in our internet business. I am not sure if the US or any other countries give out free newspaper daily but for those who live in Singapore should have heard of a famous newspaper publication called TODAY. Basically they give out free newspaper everyday in the most crowded places you can find like train stations and shopping malls.

How would you like to own your daily newspaper and earn lots of money by selling advertising space in it? The higher circulation you get, the more you can charge your advertisers. This is highly related to our blogs getting a good number of followers and subscribers and our advertising costs are affected by it. As much as we would like to start a newspaper business, most of us can’t because of the huge investment. But since the interception of something called Internet, it came along with something called Newsletter or now widely known as E-zine. Does it ring a bell now? I wrote an article on what you actually need to start an e-zine and you may check it out.

Publishing A Newsletter Yourself
Publishing a newsletter daily is easier than you think – as long as you use the Internet as you use the internet as your medium to deliver it to your subscribers. And if you follow the right strategy, you don’t even have to write any content and your subscribers won’t even mind. The following case study shows you an example of what I mean and I am pretty sure you may not have noticed this as much previously.

Case Study: The “JokeADay” Model
Ray Owens of www.jokeaday.com is an absolute genius when it comes to making money online with the least amount of effort. He publishes jokes on a daily basis (Monday – Friday) and sends it out to his 400,000 subscribers from around the world. He started off his website as a hobby by compiling jokes that he thought were funny, and sending jokes to his subscribers via e-mail if they want to receive jokes from him everyday.

He sources for the funniest jokes on the internet where there are millions of them. Jokes are not time-sensitive materials, so he can compile them months in advance and send them out whenever he chooses to. NOTE: Non time-sensitive material, big hint here! This way your subscribers won’t die off and it just keeps building.

Jokes are not copyrighted and Ray was free to grab anything on the net and use it as his own newsletter. Later in time, he asked his subscribers to submit jokes to him and up till date he has not written a single word himself. He gets his full content daily from jokes found online and those submitted by his subscribers. He then allocates two spaces for advertisements for his joke newsletter which was sold for US$250 and $350 respectively, DAILY! Now thats US$18,000 for doing nothing but sending out jokes he didn’t even have to write.

Can you do the same thing? Of coz we can and I must admit this is my main goal in 2009. In the next series, I will touch on how you can plan your business and start to market them effectively. These will be the exact same thing that I will be doing myself and I hope to see good results this year.
