There has been a seemingly increasing number of bloggers or webmasters buying text link ads, whether they are newbies or veterans. As a blogger myself, you can be sure that I would be more than happy if someone wants to buy a text link on my blog because that contributes to my monthly maintenance fee. So, there are two questions I wish to discuss today. Whether they are rhetorical or not, I hope you guys can give your views and ideas as well.
1) Would you buy high PR links to increase your own PR links so that you can sell more text link ads?
2) Would you sacrifice your own PR to sell text link ads to others?
There are no substantial facts stating that selling text links or linking to other websites would drop your own PR. But, if you have been reading it up or if you have been in the circle for some time, you can feel the difference. Google is always on a lookout and they are the law enforcers on the net.
Answering my own questions, I wouldn’t think of buying high PR links to increase my own PR just to sell more text link ads. If I were to buy high PR text links, I would hope that the money goes to the prestige more than just trying to get more sale. Second to the prestige, I would go for the targeted referral traffic and that’s is more important to me if I want to get more affiliate sales or loyal readers.
So guys, let me hear from you and give me your answers to these two questions as well!

I have never used PPC (Pay Per Click), or Ad Sense or anything similar.
Organic traffic is good enough for me!

So, do you buy links or not? I don’t think you read the post.

i agree as well thats why I prefer organic traffic because its natural and more trustworthy form of advertising when compared to the artifical methods for driving traffic to a website

I have used a free credit for facebook ads which converted nicely. But I did not pay once that free one was over with. Apart from that, organic growth is great for me. I am happy with a slow but sustained growth.

Yup I have heard quite good results about facebook ads..

First of all then my answers would be “no” and “no”.
But my first no is not that I would not buy high PR links to increase my own PR but rather that I would buy it to sell TLA links.
Secondly I am sure you know that linking to other sites will definitely NOT lower your own PR (unless you’re liking out to bad neighborhoods). The reason that you might loose your PR is merely because Google see that you’re selling links (through TLA or similar services) and that is against Google’s TOS.
Personally I prefer building up my own network of sites and have them link to my money sites.

It’s funny you say that as with Google taking the big smack-down on paid links I’ve found purchaes (by myself and others) to go down dramatically.

it really blows that you can’t buy text link ads to benefit yourself as well as the advertiser. Its really sad that google makes it so hard to have people make a living online with google dropping page ranks just because you sell text link ads on your site which is really wrong

Few ad links are enough, I would rather focus on the content of my blog before purchasing a lot of these.

yeah but the money made from selling text link ads is based on the amount of traffic your website receives as well as the page rank of your website which determines the prices of the text link ads you plan on selling

I don’t think buying links is for me either.. I’d rather let the traffic come naturally.. that makes me feel more important that traffic comes because of what I write, not because I bought it hahah

True… So much argument about paid and free targeted traffic.

yeah but jake the traffic doesn’t just come naturally unless your doing something about it like as if you’ve conquered the search engines than it can come to you naturally

This is a touchy subject. I’ve heard that Google can now determine if you have paid for a link on a website and will devalue that link juice.
I personally haven’t bought any link ads and don’t plan to do so. Would I sell them? Absolutely!
I’m with Jake. I would rather get natural traffic and not have to pay for it.

Umm you mean other then Google stating that the selling (or buying) of text link ads and purposely linking to bad neighborhoods will drop your PR?
You really confuse me Ben, there’s super substantial facts everywhere at this point…Google Themselves have made it quite clear.

i don’t buy text link ads because many people have specifically told me its a terrible idea as well as selling them as it can give you a big fat zero

@Dennis, it is not the “linking” that is the problem. It is the “selling” part that Google doesn’t like.

Not entirely true Mikael. Buyers and sellers were/are getting penalized, plus if you purposely link to bad neighborhoods, they don’t appreciate that either.

Then we agree. I had already mentioned the bad neighborhoods in a previous comment but I can see how that got lost.
I’m interested in knowing why you believe that is has to be “purposely” and not just in any event?
Reply to this comment
Well, this too has gotten skewed in the massive “telephone game” of the blogospohere, but Google has stated on a few occasions that they can pretty much tell what is deliberate and what isn’t.
Someone pays you for a banner spot for there nifty blogging blog. Three days later they go behind you and redirect it to their porn site. The hope is that Google sees this a deception on their part and not deliberate on yours.
Not always so cut/dry, but that’s the gist.

I’m sure they can discover redirects to bad neighborhoods but I can’t imagine that direct links to those sites can have different effects. Unfortunately we’ll never know for sure.

I have never bought any link, anyway you need a lot of them and need to pay monthly, this can be a real burden.
Ben, did you think having words in your featured links widget like Advertise here or Buy a link here cna be a problem? Did you use buttons to avoid this kind of text n your blog?

If you write good content, there is no need for paid links.I was a TLA publisher but quit because search engines have a problem with paid links.
Text-Link-Ads can be useful if you have a brand new blog and need some income fast, but if you have an established “old blog” with lots of content, I would not recommend it.

Just buy the link, why not? If it’s buying one would benefit your rank and traffic.

I don’t really see how a text link ad is worth paying for considering it would only be clicked on only if it spikes the curiosity of the reader than I guess it can be a great thing

I have several text link packages that I can provide through my site http://www.bennermediagroup.com. We offer roughly 20 categories of text links in almost any category you can think of. My company owns roughly 2,500 content rich websites which gives me the ability to price 80% below the market, there is no middle man. Let me know if you have interest.
