Big Cheers and Happy 25th Birthday To Mac! Apple was in its infancy when the company, started in a Northern California garage by friends Steve Wozniak and Jobs, brought the first Mac to market on Jan 24, 1984.

Here is a chronology of Mac that I would like to share with you guys. Just some interesting facts and history about Mac and frankly speaking, I wasn’t even born yet when the first Mac came out! Good news?

Jan 24 , 1984: First Mac marketed. An all-in-one design, with a built-in 9 inch black and white monitor, an 8MHz processor, 128Kb of RAM and a single 400Kb floppy drive. Nothing else looked like this!

MacPlus. Significant improvement over the original Mac. The MacPlus had 1MB of RAM which could be increased to 4MB. It has a SCSI port which allowed devices like external hard drives and printers to be added. It also came with a new floppy drive that could read 800Kb diskettes.

Macintosh II and Mac SE. The Macintosh II line was the first break from the all-in-one Macs that came before. It has six NuBus expansion slots for video or network cards.

Macintosh Portable. Apple’s first attempt at a laptop but at over 7kg (LOL), so it was not as portable as its name implied huh…

PowerBook. The PowerBook 100 and 140 models were Apple’s first real portables, tipping the scales at about 2.3kg. It shipped with System 7, Apple’s first multi-tasking operating system.

PowerMacs. After 10 years of using Motorola’s 68000 microprocessors, Apple switched to PowerPC chips made by Motorola and IBM for faster speed and performance.

iMac. Apple returned to its roots with the all-in-one iMacs. The first iMacs came out in translucent blue which sparked off a fad for blue consumer applicances. By the following year, the iMac were available in bright cheerful colours like tangerine and grape.

G4 Cube. Encased in perspex and designed to look like it was floating above the desk, the 8 inch Cube was beautiful but suffered sales-wise because it was too expensive compared to alternative offerings by Apple.

OS X. Apple released OS X (Pronounced 10, not ‘X’). The Unix-based operating system provided Mac users with the features needed by a modern operating system.

New iMac. Resembling the product of a marriage between a flat screen monitor and a desk lamp, Apple’s new iMac had a flat panel display attached by an arm to a semi-spherical base. This iMac was another effort by Apple to rethink its all-in-one offering.

Mac Mini. Looking like a flatter, less stylish Cube, the Mac Mini is Apple’s offering for those looking for an entry level Mac. Much cheaper than the Cube, it found its deserved success!

Move to Intel. Apple left the PowerPC platform for Intel’s Core Du processors citing Intel’s better performance and road map.

Macbook Air. The Macbook Air is just orgasmic, pardon me for my language. But if you ever come across or own one, you know what I mean! Less than 2cm thick, the Air weighs just 1.36kg.
