Video Blogging: The Next Big Thing?

Posted by: admin on 17 December 2008 - 1,276 views

Videoblogging, otherwise known as vlogging is the next generation of posting ideas and products over the internet. Everybody knows about text blogging. Now they use videos for a better way of expression. This form of communication may entail a lot of resources, but it is all worth it. If pictures say a thousand words, video blogging exceeds that by far.

A video blog requires larger disk spaces on websites, a faster server, and a whole new set of programs to support it. Video blogs can be fed through RSS. This is technology of syndicating your website to other RSS aggregators.

Video blogging works with people on the internet expressing their selves. Now if you put this on a business prospective, you are up to a lot of benefits. Think of it as a powerful tool in making showing your prospective customers your line of products or your services. It’s just like showing a commercial all for free. And if you video blog through RSS, then most probably you are getting your target market.

People like to see what they are going to buy. Some would like to see proof and be sure that they are getting their money’s worth before shelving their dimes on it. All of us know the influence of a thirty second commercial. The effect of video blogging is similar to that. You show your product, people watch it. If they like it, they buy it. If you present it good enough, they’ll buy the product even if they don’t need it.

Now on the web, things are pretty much static, unlike in television in which all are moving. If you post something that is mobile, it would most likely catch attention. If your internet or home based business is just starting up, you can create a video blog right at your own home. All you need is your web camera, microphone, video software, and lights. For as long as you know how to use your camera, then you can create a video blog.

Invest in a good web camera. Well, I just did! You guys will be seeing and hearing me more often than before. I hope its a good thing for you? The higher its resolution is the better the output. And you like to present your goods in the optimum way so get the best one possible. Make a short story, or just capture your goods in one go. Just make sure you are getting the best profile for each. Get those creativity juices flowing.

Lights are important in a production. Make sure you illuminate entirely the area you are going to use to create video blog. The brighter the area, the crispier the images will be. You can also use lighting effects for added appeal to the presentation.

Should you require sounds for your video blog, you need a microphone. Record you voice as a voice over for promoting the product and its benefit to consumers. Sounds are as important as videos on a video blog. It is advisable to make your sound effects as enticing as the video.

Your video editing software can be any program. You need this to finalize your work. You can add sounds, delete some bad angles, or insert some still pictures in there too. Some programs are user-friendly and can be used even with zero knowledge on video editing. Even simple video editing programs should do the trick. Select your background carefully too. The light affects the presentation so make sure that the background and the light complements each other.

Video blogging is a great tool but it also has it downside. It may slow down the computer so other may steer clear of it. Download time may also be time consuming especially if customer is still on a dial- up connection. But don’t let those stop you. Let video blogging be an alternative for you, though it is best to still keep the text and pictures present in your presentation to accommodate all possible viewers of your site.

Nowadays, the more creative you are in presenting your product to the market, they more you are likely to succeed. Video blogging offers an interactive way of selling. You involve the customers. You instill in them the advantage of your goods. And at times, those are enough to make a sale.

Oh great! Now we have to be actors as well as writers. What is the Internet coming to? LOL

Seriously Ben, I can see where vlogging may interest a lot of people, especially businesses, but I do not think that I will be going that way. Sure I may include a video or two in my posts, but a blog full of videos? Nope, not for me.

Oh my goodness, I hope not… like Sire commented, I don’t know how I feel about being an actress AND a writer. haha.

I’ve considered buying a camcorder (better quality than my built-in webcam, but I suppose that would work) to try it out, but I want to wait till I get more traffic first.

Hi Ben,

I agree with video blogging and it already is pretty big. I was thinking about investing in a camera and equipment. Any certain brand that has it all that you would suggest?

I think video is a better way of communications, especially in today’s age where the younger generation isn’t really into reading that much. As the saying goes, a picture speaks a thousand words, and videos speak a thousand times more! I believe video is also a better way of building that connection, because you see the person in action and speaking to you.

Video Blogging seems to be coming up more nowadays, just like some already said, it’s just a better form of communication, text blogging can bring the point across, but most people will likely sit through an hour long video rather than sit there and read paragraphs after paragraphs.

plus you can see the actual person there to see their facial expressions and personality.

Ben when are you going to start video blogging?

I actually have a Mini-DVD cam under the Christmas tree for my wife … I’m sure I will end up borrowing it for some video blogging at some point. I can’t say that it will replace traditional blogging but it will definitely be a lasting compliment to it. What better way to let your readers get to know you.

I think video blogging will be popular, but I’m not sure that it will be able to take over the blogging world, because not a lot of people can view movies/youtubes/webcams as easily as they can a webpage, with consideration to slow web connections, interruptions at work, etc. Plus, if it was an useful article, you couldn’t print it out for future reference. For very personal websites, or an addition to a regular blog, it is a great idea though.

It has its ups and downs. If you go into vlogging, you get traffic from video directories as well. Yeah like you said, a written article is more practical.

I don’t think it should, and hope it never does “take over”. It’s perfect as it is as an “addition to”.

Some of the best I’ve seen is from Collin @ FeedFlare (feedflare.ca), where he puts both vieo and text in the same post…very cool.

I think it’s certainly got potential

As as some have said, it is a good addition to, but I would prefer to only watch a video when i want to, not because I have to

It takes a special person to come across well in video. Many of us have great ideas, and can write high quality posts, but once the camera is on it’s another story.

I think the verdict is still out on vlogging for this reason, those who do it well will see their “readership” skyrocket, but do it poorly and I think you run the risk of turning a lot of people off.

i think vblogging will sure be proved as a cyclone for blogosphere… it may change the whole concept of blogging as well as making money online… still i think it may take time as it will need more speedy servers as well as high bandwidth, which may not be afford by many of the bloggers who are hardly surviving in this blogosphere. by the way nice post ben and thanx for sharing :)

I like video blogging because it adds a “face” to what someone’s saying and you can hear their voice which lets them express themselves in a more direct manner. How long is “too long,” though? A long video message will turn people off. How long should the ideal vlog be? Also, how often should someone record a video message? Daily? Weekly?

What are your thoughts?
